چکیده

Innovations in computer graphics and computer vision have been applied in various golf-related applications – motion capture systems to provide detailed swing analysis, video systems to supplement golf instruction, highprecision launch monitors to track club and ball physics, and state-of-the-art graphics techniques to develop golf video games that continue to look more and more realistic. Recently, EA Sports has added a feature to their golf video game to make the user experience especially unique: the ability to upload images of one’s own face to map onto 3D characters in the game. We would like to extend this idea by developing a system that takes a 2D video sequence of a golf swing and translates it onto a 3D character model, which, if successful, could reasonably be incorporated into future versions of the game. Motion capture can be used to create very precise 3D models of a golfer’s swing, but it is of course only available to people with access to such studios. It is very accessible and common, however, for golfers to record video of their swings using traditional video cameras or digital cameras. Converting the latter format – a 2D sequence of images – into the former – a 3D model – would approximate the precision of motion capture without the barrier to entry. We will build a software application that takes as input video of a golf swing from several vantage points and produces a 3D model that approximates the positions of the golfer in the input video. To assist in the conversion process and to achieve more precise results, the user will be asked to calibrate the input swing sequence by identifying key positions in the swing (e.g. the locations of the golfer’s shoulders, elbows, and hands). These clues will then be used to map the golfer’s positions onto a 3D model.

CSE 190a Project Report: Golf Club Head Tracking

Computer vision and graphics technologies have been used extensively in developing golf instruction and entertainment systems. In this project, we work towards constructing the trajectory of a golf swing from high quality video, since this information can enable many of these types of applications. We build on previous work that estimates a 2D spatio-temporal trajectory model from video, and we...

Comparison of Two- and Three-Dimensional Methods for Analysis of Trunk Kinematic Variables in the Golf Swing.

Two-dimensional methods have been used to compute trunk kinematic variables (flexion/extension, lateral bend, axial rotation) and X-factor (difference in axial rotation between trunk and pelvis) during the golf swing. Recent X-factor studies advocated three-dimensional (3D) analysis due to the errors associated with two-dimensional (2D) methods, but this has not been investigated for all trunk ...

Biomechanical Modelling of a Golf Swing by Means of the Multibody-Kinetics Software "ADAMS"

Previous double pendulum models of the golf swing could have included some over-simplifications (only two model segments, 2D analysis of 3D motion, rotation around a fixed pivot point). This has been overcome by full-body models driven by motion capture data from real swings. However, information regarding the validity of these models is still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to cr...

Methodological considerations for the 3D measurement of the X-factor and lower trunk movement in golf.

It is believed that increasing the X-factor (movement of the shoulders relative to the hips) during the golf swing can increase ball velocity at impact. Increasing the X-factor may also increase the risk of low back pain. The aim of this study was to provide recommendations for the three-dimensional (3D) measurement of the X-factor and lower trunk movement during the golf swing. This three-part...
